“Dad, what is Pyjama Day ?” asked little Jack.
“Don’t you know what Pyjamas are?” asked Dad.
“I know what Pyjamas are Dad, but tomorrow is supposed to be the national day for Pyjamas” said Jack eagerly.
“Is it? I never knew that there was a Pyjama Day until you told me Son”, said Dad.
“You can talk to Siri on your iPhone!” said Jake giggling.
“That’s a good idea son,” then he added “Let me check.”
Dad took his phone out and said “What is Pyjama Day Siri?”
Siri said “Hmm let me think… Here is what I found for Pyjama Day on the net for ‘What is Pyjama Day?”
It listed the search results on the net. Dad quickly checked the results and said to his son.
“You are right Son, tomorrow is the national day for Pyjamas”.
“Dad, why do we call them Pyjamas?” asked Jack.
“I don’t know Son, all I know is that it doesn’t sound like an English word” said Dad smiling.
“My mom used to call them PJs and I called them Jammies” said Dad, breaking into a smile, to his son Jack.
“Jammies sounds like Biscuits Dad!” said Jack, who was bawling away with laughter.
“Pyjamas doesn’t sound like clothing does it?” said Dad laughing.
“It must mean something Dad!” said Jack.
“How about you check on Wikipedia Dad?” said Jack desperately.
“I need do something else, how about I tell you all about it tomorrow?” said Dad.
“But Dad, tomorrow is the national day for Pyjamas!” he then pointed out “I said in school that I would say something about Pyjamas!” then, he reminded “You promised to Mom that you will spend a lot of time with me today” said Jack.
“Sorry Son, I can’t talk about Pyjamas all day can I?” Said Dad, annoyed.
“But I promised in School so please …please can you tell me something about it?” said Jack persuasively.
“Alright, Fine. Let me check” Dad started checking the site.
After a few minutes Dad said. “It’s very interesting Son!” said Dad.
“What is it?” said the son curiously.
“The word Pyjamas came from India!” surprisedly said Dad.
“India?” Jack shouted loudly.
“Son, if you shout so loudly people in India will wake up as it’s the night time in India.”, said Dad
“Dad..” said Jack
“You didn’t say a lot about pyjamas Dad! What should I say tomorrow then?” asked Jack thinking he hasn’t got enough details to say about pyjamas in the class next day.
“How about if you tell them a story about an Elephant in Pyjamas?” said Dad.
“Wow, Dad. That’s a wonderful idea!” said Jack impressed by his Dad’s idea.
“But, I don’t know any Elephant Pyjamas stories.” said Jack
“I know one” Dad claimed trying to make up a story.
Dad started narrating the story to his son Jack.
“One day an Elephant went to the shop to buy a Pyjama. The Elephant said to the Monkey shop keeper, “I want to buy a Pyjama please?”
The shop keeper said “I don’t have a ready made Pyjama that will fit you but I have a cloth that you can get stitched. I am not sure it will be enough though?”
“Sorry to disappoint you”, said the Monkey shop keeper.
Elephant said “It’s my birthday tomorrow and I really wanted to wear one for my birthday.”
“Do you know anyone who can stitch a Pyjama for me?” said the Elephant.
The shop keeper Monkey said ” Yes, I know someone but I can’t leave the shop now. I will send someone to take you to the tailor.”
“Very kind of you, here is the money”, he handed over Bananas to the Monkey.
The shop keeper Monkey asked a student Monkey who worked at the shop to take him to the tailor.
The student Monkey asked Elephant “Can I sit on top of you?”
Elephant said “Have you ever been on an Elephant ride before?”
“No, but I am used to my mom’s rides on the trees. I am not scared” the student Monkey replied boastingly.
“Ok” said the Elephant and he warned the monkey to be careful as he might get dizzy.
They reached the tailor’s shop. The student Monkey said “Thank you for the ride, I really enjoyed it.”
“You are welcome at any time.” said the Elephant.
The student Monkey said to the tailor Giraffe that the Elephant needed his Pyjamas stitched.
The giraffe said “I can stitch a Pyjama but don’t think I have enough thread to stitch Pyjamas for an Elephant.”
Elephant said to Giraffe to stitch with what he has got as tomorrow is his birthday and couldn’t wait to wear his favourite night dress.”
Giraffe agreed to stitch it but forgot to take his measurements. As Elephant left, Giraffe felt really sorry and ashamed. Giraffe remembered that it was Elephant’s birthday tomorrow, if he didn’t get his Pyjama then Elephant would be so disappointed on his birthday which won’t be very nice. He doesn’t know where Elephant lives either, but he got a brilliant idea. He saw a tree trunk and thought it looks similar to the Elephant legs. He went and took rough measurements and started stitching. He didn’t finish until midnight as it was a huge dress to finish. Moreover he didn’t have enough thread so could not use all of the cloth that Monkey had brought in.
The next day student Monkey and the Elephant came to Giraffe. They saw Giraffe taking a nap at a very odd time. They woke him up and said “Isn’t it an odd time to sleep?”. Giraffe explained how late he was working to finish the Pyjamas for the Elephant.
Elephant was very pleased and gave him the leaves that Giraffe likes most. Giraffe was so happy to receive the very very special leaves. Giraffe thanked the Elephant and wished him a very happy birthday.
Elephant was pleased and thanked both the student Monkey and Giraffe and set off to his house.
After reaching home, he wore the dress and showed it to his parents. The parents laughed out loud and said they don’t look anything like Pyjamas, and they look more like swimming trunks.
The baby Elephant asked what swimming trunks were? Dad Elephant explained all about swimming trunks and not to get confused with the Elephant trunks and Tree trunks. Then the baby Elephant remembered,
“Silly me. I didn’t give any measurements to the tailor. How could he stitch my Pyjamas properly.” said the baby Elephant laughing.
The baby Elephant’s parents said he is looking really cute in his trunks and promised to buy Pyjamas the next day.
They all ate their favourite cake made out of sugar cane juice and spent the rest of the day happily together eating their favourite food.
“That the end of the story!” said Dad.
“That’s really a very nice story Dad”, said Jack.
Jack woke up the next day and was very exited to tell others about his story. He wore his favourite Pyjamas with Elephant character printed on it to school.
His teacher asked Jack to say something about Pyjamas. He narrated the whole story to his class. After listening to the story they all applauded and said they really enjoyed and liked the story.
The teacher gave Jack a sticker for telling the class such a wonderful story and entertaining the whole class on the national day of Pyjamas.
In the evening, dad came home. Jack came running to explain all about his day at school and gave his dad a very big hug. Jack asked his dad to tell him the story again at bedtime and dad agreed to it. Jack couldn’t wait to hear it again.
Dad told the whole story to him at bedtime.
“Thank you Daddy !” said Jack
“You are welcome Son!” said Dad
“Good night Dad.”
“Night Night, sleep tight in your Pyjamas!”, said Dad
“Ok I will Dad!”, said his son then he happily dozed off.
Cerys said that it was very good and really descriptive. She loved the story about the elephant and his pyjamas but said that it is a shame that she wasn’t able to find out why pyjamas were called Pyjamas, since the word isn’t an English word. It has however sparked her curiosity to find out.
Overall she loved the story.
