These prose translations from Rabindranath Tagore have stirred my blood as nothing has for years.. I have carried the manuscript of these translations about with me for days, reading it in railway trains, or on the tops of omnibuses and in restaurants, and I have often had to close it lest some stranger would see…

“వసంతంలో ఒక రోజు పొద్దున ఎత్తైన తాటిచెట్టు నుండి అప్పుడే తీసిన తాటికల్లుని తన మనవరాలికి త్రాగడానకి ఇచ్చినందుకు ఆ ఈండ్రవాఁడిని చివాట్లు పెట్టాను.  ఆ పాప ఎవరో కూడా నాకు తెలీదు, తాటి ఆకుతో చేసిన గరిటతో కల్లు త్రాగుతూ తన మొహం కూడా సరిగా కనపడటం లేదు. వెర్రి పిల్ల! ఆ త్రాగేది కల్లు అని కూడా తెలియని పసి వయసు. ఆ ముసలాయన నా చివాట్లు పెడచెవున పెడుతూ “ఏం కాదులే ఆయ్యా”…
